    Short description

The first documented mention of Castle Nanstein was in 1253. The castle was an imperial castle, in 13th and 15th century and especially in the 14th and 15th century, it was in the possession of a castle community with numerous commoners and multiple changes of ownership.

From 1518, Franz von Sickingen as sole proprietor expanded the castle to an alleged firearm-suitable fortification. 1523 was a siege through elector Ludwig V. of Palatinate, archbishop Richard of Trier and landgrave Philipp I. of Hesse. Through the biggest artillery array of the time then, the castle was shot, ready to be stormed and Franz von Sickingen, the rebellious chevalier, got badly hurt. He died May 7, 1523. From 1543, the descendants of Sickingen reconstruct the castle to a renaissance castle. The garrisons changed during the Thirty Years’ War. In 1668, the elector of Palatinate captured the castle and the facility got partly detonated.

French troops detonated further parts of the castle in 1689. From 1869 on, the castle got renovated in parts. The partly-reconstructed battery tower from the time of Franz von Sickingen seems mainly impressive.

The castle hill raises 80 meters above the city and offers a wide view over Landstuhl, up to the Northern Palatinate hill country. The 100 meter long and 50 meter wide castle is also the romantic scenery for the castle theater in summer, concerts and guided castle tours.

With 70 seats inside and 150 seats on the panorama terrace, the “Burgschänke” invites to stop and rest, beneath the castle.

The popular Old Chapel, officially called the Holy Cross Chapel is on the demonstrably oldest settlement area of Landstuhl.

It’s only the choir of the former medieval St. Andrew's Church, probably built in the late 14th century. In 1805/06 the slightly wider nave of the church was demolished because of poor building structure and the choir room was transformed into a chapel.

Over the centuries, the Old Chapel experienced a colorful history. After Franz von Sickingen (1481-1523), owner of Nanstein Castle, which was rising above the city, sympathized with Martin Butzer and Johannes Schwebel and the two reformers began as pastors in Landstuhl, one of the first Reformed church services in Germany took place in this parish church. From the 16th century to the 18th century, the people of Landstuhl had to adapt to the beliefs of their respective rulers. In the parish church, Catholic, Protestant, Catholic, Protestant, Catholic and Calvinistic services were then held.

The cemetery surrounding the church was a burial ground for over 500 years. Since 1836 it is no longer used as a cemetery. The grave monuments of important Landstuhl citizens date from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. During the Second World War, soldiers and civilian victims of a bomb attack found their last resting place here.

    Short description

The view point "Am Herrengärtchen" was opened in the 19th century, when Landstuhl was a spa town. It was possible to stroll there from the spa gardens. The vernacular tells that around 1830 Heinrich Didier, owner of the post office, landowner and entrepreneur, from here controlled his workers in cultivating the breaker with a telescope. Decades later, the Hautevolé on the rock was still at home: the industrialist Karl-Ferdinand von Stumm-Halberg bought in 1853 with the Gienanth groves also the "Herrengärtchen". The view point was the center of hunts and forest festivals, to which privileged guests from all over Germany were invited. The story thus explains the origin of the name by the vernacular.
